Quick Review:
Directed by Vivek Agnihotri, Produced by Vikram Bhatt and starring none other than the Bengali bombshell Paoli Dam, 'Hate Story' can be tagged as one of the most controversial and erotic film in Bollywood and for this the courtesy goes to all the lovemaking and sexual scenes performed by the lead actress. The uncensored trailer was quite hyped all over and thus the viewers were expecting something related to that in the full length movie. However, unfortunately people will be less satisfied in terms of the sex-content, but will be more impressed in terms of the story-content.
Story:
'Hate Story' is the story about one dare-devil lady journalist and a short-tempered young businessman. Kavya Krishnan (Paoli Dam) is a very dynamic and talented reporter, who along with the help of his best friend come press photographer Vicky (Nikhil Dwivedi) had carried out a corporate sting operation against one of the leading cement company which is governed by Industrialist Inder Kumar Dhanrajgir (Saurabh Dubey) and managed by his son Siddharth Dhanrajgir (Gulshan Devaiya). As losing is not in the dictionary of Sid aka Siddharth and has only one phrase in his bold dictionary 'I fuck with those people who fuck with me', he organized a plan to destroy emotionally and physically none other than the lady behind the sting operation, Kavya Krishnan.
At first Sid offered Kavya to work under his company as a personal secretary, and then loved her, used her and lastly thrown outside from
the professional as well as from his personal life. Emotionally wrecked Kavya soon realized that she is pregnant. When she informed this to Sid, in an attempt to break this scandalous news in front of the media, he forcefully aborted their child with an unwanted operation in such a way that she won't become mother in future as well. After all this happenings in Kavya's life, she decided to take revenge against Siddharth Dhanrajgir, in such a way that she will not only destroy her attitude and power but also the big empire which he is currently managing, brick by brick.
Kavya becomes one of the topmost 'Call Girl aka Prostitute' and uses her sexuality to execute her revengeful plan. On other side when Sid gets to knew about the evil tactics of Kavya, he uses his influential power to destroy the lady. The story then follows how Kavya and Siddharth use their individual powers to destroy each other. The climax of the story comes with the Chinese proverb which has been used in the movie as well, 'Jab kisise Badla lene ki thanlo, Toh Ek nahin Do kabar khod leni chaiye'.
Screenplay & Direction:
As the story and screenplay is written by renowned filmmaker Vikram Bhatt, so the expectations were but obvious a bit high from this movie. Also as the basic plot was already revealed through its trailer, people were only looking for something exciting and gripping screenplay. However Vikram Bhatt has successfully managed to engage the audience throughout the movie in the company of its watertight screenplay, but had also let down the viewers in offering a bit dissatisfied sexual content, through which the movie was hugely promoted. Courtesy for lessening down these sexual contents in the movie goes to only Censor Boards, where according to the reports, they have trimmed down almost 50% of such types of scenes.
Audience will be fairly unhappy, especially for those who are only planning to watch lovemaking and sex scenes in the movie, as once it will get start and the moment your eyes will be wide open, the scene will be ended, along with the satisfactory continuation in the storyline.
Direction by Vivek Agnihotri was brilliant and he can be labeled as one of the topnotch storytellers in the industry, bearing in mind the predictable basic plot. Lovemaking scenes were also aesthetically and beautifully shot, such that it will look less vulgar and more relevant according to the story.
A lot of things happen during the start 30mins and till the mid-half, the story engages you in bits and pieces. Although it's the second half of the movie, where the writer and the director both had managed it very well to capture one's attention, right till the last frame of the film. Scenes such as Sid ditches Kavya in office, Kavya's forceful abortion, Kavya meeting Bhairavi for the first time, Kavya meeting Inder Kumar in board meeting, Kavya meeting Minister in Police Van, the climax Annual General Meeting, and so on were beautifully narrated and shot, along with some of the splendid dialogues written by Rohit Malhotra. Apart from the predictable yet gripping storyline and somewhat vulgar sexual contents in the movie, dialogues is another major plus point which will impress the viewers.
Music and Other technicalities:
All the songs are just situational based, but according to the storyline it somehow blends well. Background score carried out by Amar Mohile was hugely impressive and electrifying. You may forget the songs, but you won't forget the background music in the movie. Cinematography was excellent, Editing was first-rate, and rest of the other technicalities was also good enough, considering the respective genre.
Performances:
Although the bong bombshell Paoli Dam has made her Bollywood debut with this movie, but she is a well-known actor and had also achieved a lot of awards for her great performance in Bengali movies. She was tremendous, outstanding and simply remarkable in her performance here. Not only she gave a very bold act in Bollywood, but her confidence level, her dialogues delivery, her expressions not only through facial but as well through eyes, her physical attributes and many more were simply extraordinary and a worth to praise.
Apart from Paoli, there is one more actor in this movie, who is up to now underrated. Gulshan Devaiya was terrific and he has given one of his finest performances in his career. Although he has acted in quite a few biggie movies, but Hate Story displays his real talent, which is worth to watch and a worth to admire.
Nikhil Dwivedi had supported well. Mohan Kapoor, Joy Sengupta, Saurabh Dubey, Iravati Harshe, and others were good in their respective brief roles.
Final verdict:
Hate Story is purely watchable, for his concise sexual content and also for his predictable yet gripping storyline. It's a good revengeful entertainer movie and will impress you through varied factors.
