Quick review:

Agent Vinod has once again proved that good trailer, strong star cast, big banner and a big hype doesn’t mean that the movie would be something worth watching or extraordinary. Just like in past we have experienced a series of big banner films turning into some mediocre product, Agent Vinod is no more different. Saif Ali Khan’s home production project, directed by Sriram Raghavan, is a desi-bond film, which however can be watched with zero expectations.

Story:

Saif Ali Khan aka Agent Vinod is a RAW agent from India, with a dare-devil personality along with a smart mind and performing speedy actions. He got some information from his colleague cum good friend Rajan (Ravi Kissen) that a big terrorist activity would be soon to occur at some place in world, and the only hint is the number 242 which can be recovered by one of the International mafia Abu Nazer (Ram Kapoor). After getting in touch with Abu, Agent Vinod got some more information about Kazan (Prem Chopra) and after that about Colonel (Adil Hussain), who is the pilot of this forthcoming terrorist activity. Soon he is acquainted with the fact that a big bomb explode is going to happen at New Delhi that can result to more than 2000 death tolls.

How Agent Vinod manages to opens out some more clues to find the secret behind the number 242, to find the exact location where the bomb will get explode, and finally to find the real culprit behind this whole mayhem, forms the crux of the story.

Screenplay & Direction:

The basic plot of the movie was quite nice, but the execution in certain manner, not a powerful screenplay and the time duration was the major flaw to upset the audience. The very start of the movie impresses you and one would look forward for something more, but gradually the pace of the movie slows down with some abrupt scene ending and confusing tale. Despite the fact that the second half of the movie amazes with quite a few action sequences, but a sluggish execution disinterests the viewers. The movie has some interesting and engaging scenes like the very start sequence in Afghanistan, Saif and Ravi’s tête-à-tête, entire Ram Kapoor’s episode, Prem Chopra along with Kareena Kapoor interrogating Saif, Saif’s fight scene with his old rivalry at Auction day, and much more.

Sriram Raghavan, who has directed brilliant movies like Ek Hasina Thi and Johnny Gaddar, is the man to praise for his excellent direction skills. Each and every action sequences, building tension during the climax, creating suspense through his direction, and so on were the key inputs to connect the audience throughout the movie, even in this average screenplay. However the story is as well written by Sriram Raghavan, along with Arijit Biswas, but the direction was much more impressive than the so-called storyline of the movie.

Music & Other technicalities:

All the songs in the movie are enjoyable and very well picturized, however no songs are something like full-fledged and is carried out while taking the story in forward direction. Songs like ‘I’ll Do The Talking Tonight’ and ‘Dil Mera Muft Ka’ are quite entertaining and takes the story forward, whereas ‘Raabta’ is one of the most beautiful picturized song. ‘Agent Vinod Theme’ and ‘Pungi’, both comes during the start and end credits respectively, and both are equally foot-tapping numbers.  However the background score is not at all impressive. The makers might have thought to adopt some foreign style and attempted to deliver something different to Indian audience, but because of the flaws in storyline, the background score acts like sprinkling oil in fire. Cinematography was first-rate and has captured quite a good locale in foreign countries. Editing was equally good, especially certain action sequences. However if the storyline part is taken into consideration, then the editing work could have been little more tight and crisp. Rest of the technicalities were fine.

Performances:

Saif Ali Khan can be tagged as next Bourne and desi Bond mortal in our Bollywood, as he has each and every aspect and quality inside him to match those requirements, who would be looking forward in suspense, thriller and in a Bond types of movies. His body language, performing action stunts, and a complete focussed Spy Agent character impress the viewers, and as well covers up the flaws in the weak script. Kudos to Saif for his guts to enter in James Bond terrain in his career, as everybody knows it’s not a piece of cake to perform such roles.  Kareena looks simply gorgeous and stunning in each and every frame of her in the movie, especially in her Mujra song ‘Dil Mere Muft Ka’. As far as acting in concerned, she has performed quite well in her part. Although the chemistry was missing between the real-n-reel life couple in the movie, but that can be ignored bearing in mind the genre of the movie. Look of Ram Kapoor was extraordinary and he as well gave an outstanding performance in his short role. Prem Chopra and Ravi Kissen were great. Gulshan Grover, Shahbaaz Khan, Dheerendra Dwivedi, and others have performed well in their brief yet pivotal roles. Adil Hussain was the attention-grabber. Maryam Zakaria looked gorgeous in her very short role. Malika Haydon and Ann Lee Roberts were just there to add glam.

Plus Points:

  • Action Sequences
  • Performances
  • Glam quotient
  • Entertaining music
  • Sriram Raghavan’s excellent direction
  • Attraction in watching Real life couple on Reel life

Minus Points:

  • Sluggish screenplay
  • Long 3hrs duration
  • Distracting Background Score
  • Kareena’s character
  • Story moving in different countries in about 20mins
  • Poor Climax

Final Verdict:

Despite the fact that Saif Ali Khan’s ‘Agent Vinod’ was quite hyped, and with no other big banner or major movie released after Kahaani (March 10, 2012), people were looking forward with some good expectations from this movie. However just like in past, this movie has again proved that all that glitters is not gold. With the reality to accept that the movie has weak storyline and bad execution in certain manner, Agent Vinod is an all time one time watch, with having zero expectations from it.
