Quick Review:

Directed by Vishal Mahadkar and Produced by Mahesh Bhatt, Blood Money is a crime and thriller based movie, starring Kunal Khemu and Amrita Puri in lead roles. Earlier many were comparing the movie with Hollywood blockbuster movie ‘Blood Diamond’ (2006), and as well with Bhatt’s earlier directorial film Naam (1986), but Bhatt declined both of these allegations. Blood Money is a sequel to Bhatt’s earlier film Kalyug that also starred Kunal Khemu in it, and the makers were planning to name it as ‘Kalyug 2’. However, the film title was later change to ‘Blood Money’ to maintain its originality.  Although the genre of the movie is thriller and crime, so the storyline of it acts as a key role. Sadly, the writing department fails to deliver something hardcore content, but on the contrary, had managed to deliver an enjoyable product.

Story:

It is the story of a young and talented boy Kunal Kadam (Kunal Khemu) who after completing his MBA gets a dream job in a multinational diamond export company at Cape Town. Kunal shifts his base from Mumbai to Cape Town with his lovely and gorgeous wife Arzoo (Amrita Puri). The business tycoon Zaveri (Manish Choudhary) runs the diamond export company, where Kunal works now. The job provides Kunal a lavish house, pricey car and a very luxurious life.  After cracking a deal smartly and benefitting the company with some good profit, Zaveri promotes Kunal and gives some more responsibility and accordingly more lavishness in his life. In a craze to become more and more successful in professional life, Kunal ignores his wife and family life. Just before the interval, the story takes a new turn where Kunal discovers the real picture of Zaveri and his company, by getting familiar with the fact that it deals with the mafia people and doing a lot of illegal business. Silently he continues to do his job but on the inner side, he feels very much on the wrong side of the law. How Kunal manages to escape from this trap and how he plans to put Zaveri behind the bars, forms the crux of the story.

Screenplay & Direction:

The basic plot of the movie is interesting, but sadly, the screenplay does not impress you much. Written by Upendra Sidhye, who had earlier penned down the story of Payback (2010), the overall storyline of Blood Money is quite clichéd and mediocre. The first half of the movie begins in a smooth manner and later on slowly and gradually takes its own peak. The second half of the movie provides some interesting sequences, but all can be prejudge and presume.

Despite the fact that the complete movie is cover with the hackneyed story, but still it is the execution part of it that engages and entertains the viewers. The major plus point in the film is its climax part, where one just cannot prejudge or presume what is going to be happen next. The one more plus point here is its running time, because of which the clichéd part is overshadowed.
Vishal Mahadkar makes his debut in direction with ‘Blood Money’, and he has showed his fruitful talent. However, because of its mediocre script, he didn’t get a chance to explore much. On the other hand, he has narrated and executed a number of sequences remarkably and succeeds to engage the audience throughout the movie. Dialogues of the movie, written by Sanjay Masoom, are also quite impressive and very well written.

Music & Other technicalities:

Just like all the Bhatt’s movies, the music of Blood Money is no such different. All the songs are quite melodious, soulful and one can just enjoy it while listening. However, the picturization of these songs can be rated as average to good, as most of the songs are merely situational based. Composed by Jeet Ganguly, Pranay, Sangeet Haldipur and Siddharth Haldipur and the lyrics penned down by Sayeed Quadri, Kumaar, the overall music was good and harmonious. Background score gave a good impact to the sequences.  Cinematography is admirable, as Nigam Bomzan had beautifully captured the locales of the Cape Town. Editing and rest of the technicalities were fine.

Performances:

Kunal Khemu acts as a leading protagonist, and thus there was a heavy load on his shoulders to run the movie. However, he is one such actor who has super talent inside him, but has been underrated time and again. Though he has proved his potential by enacting quite a lot of supporting roles, but after observing him in ‘Kalyug’ and now again in ‘Blood Money’, one would surely love to watch him in more movies as a leading actor. In the movie, Kunal was very much confident and realistic in his character. He not only managed to carry the entire movie in his shoulders, but also impressed everyone with his excellent performance.

After playing a small role in Aisha, this young and budding actress Amrita Puri demonstrated everyone that she is having good potential inside her by giving a spellbound performance. Just through her facial expression, she tells many things about the scene. Overall, she has supported and balanced the chemistry between Kunal and her character. This should be a new start for this up-and-coming beautiful actress.

Manish Choudhary yet again delivered an outstanding performance. After Rocket Singh, this would be his yet another spectacular performance in a negative role. This exceptional actor deserves to be seen in more and more lead antagonist roles. The hot-n-burning Mia Uyeda appeared in her very short role in the movie, but sizzles the screen in the company of her scorching sexuality and hot scene with Kunal. Rest of the actors supported well.

Final Verdict:

Despite the fact that Blood Money has a clichéd and mediocre storyline, but it has been execute and presented in a smart manner, especially the climax portion, along with some impressive performances in it. Overall, it is purely a onetime watch movie and the mango people will enjoy watching from start to finish.
